However Jaeger-LeCoultre? It is not so evident an alternative. External watch-loving circles, not many people know the brand or understand how significant it really is. Thus there is a feeling that you are paying for more than just a brand name, a sense bolstered by the unbelievable detailing on the watch dial and motion. And this Cable? You get used to it. If anything, it turns into a unique character trait over an annoyance. You won’t find that at an “engineered” watch. In fact, the newest Master Control Date Stainless Steel benchmark 1548530 (to give it its full name) is the cheapest Jaeger-LeCoultre men’s view at the brand’s whole selection, in #4,800. A Reverso Medium comes in at #5,100 (the little Reverso models are quartz-powered and aimed at women). It’s possible to compare them for yourselves here. Comparing old and new Master Controls is intriguing. Line up these watches together and you’ll notice that, quite obviously, they have a lot in common. The same movement, for a beginning: the only barrel, in-house automated calibre 899/1 using 219 components, beating at 4Hz. They use the same 39mm case and crown too.

However, before I could begin enjoying this opinion, I had to do something: change the strap. Packaged using the Master Control Date is a dark blue alligator strap with some padding up shirt and matching blue stitching. It closes with a simple pin buckle (major bonus points for not including a deployant here). However, I found that the strap to be extremely stiff and uncomfortable, with all the padding unnecessary and wonky. I am sure it’d soften up a bit after a while wear, but the quality did not seem to match that of the opinion itself. Easy fix though. I snapped the watch on a textured gray calf leather strap (from the HODINKEE Shop, if you will permit an accidental but shameless plug) and it instantly felt right in home. Most of my friends are fairly used to seeing me appear areas with some new watch on my wrist that I’m obliged to wear for a review (hard life, I understand). Normally they don’t even take notice, and very seldom do they remark on watches. This watch though got tons of attention. For something comparatively understated and little, the Master Control Date is extremely striking and, even to the uninitiated, it seems like something particular. I had non-watch friends asking to test it on, that never happens. If you’re a longtime HODINKEE reader, it probably comes as no surprise that I really dig this particular watch. As somebody not-so-mildly obsessed with matters such as classic Richard Neutra buildings and old Leica cameras, a modestly-sized watch with a clean, minimalist dial motivated by mid-century functionalism is right in my wheelhouse. But even if you can not pick a Case Study House from a lineup, the Master Control Date’s layout should still be attractive. It’s simple to read, comfortable on the wrist, and the subtle contrasts on the dial allow it to be something you’ll be able to look at differently, discovering something new each time.

Mostly, it’s how it looks. The “industry” dial — made from concentric circles divided into segments by extended hour marks — is a layout relic from the earlier half of the century used by watchmakers such as Omega and Longines. With the industry’s current classic resurrection, it was bound to make a comeback, though it’s still fairly uncommon. Rather than thick, lume-coated hands, the JLC’s are basically an open framework. It would be a wonky appearance on plenty of other watches, but it is a perfect fit here — fitting the vintage aesthetic while allowing the brushed parts of the dial to remain (mostly) unobscured. Those hands point to black printed numerals and subdued blue hour markers across the exterior of the watch. The situation itself is equally magnificent. At 39mm in diameter and only 8.5mm thick, so it’s perfectly fine — not too little, not too thin. It is going to easily fit under a shirt cuff, but it won’t have the fragile feeling of an ultra-thin watch. The low height also makes it comfortable and light to wear. You might forget you are wearing it. Until you listen to the rotor, anyway. So where does that place the Master in comparison to its other Korean peers? Well, it’s worth noting that this version of the Master Control is currently Jaeger-LeCoultre’s most economical mechanical opinion, no doubt in an effort to reach a bigger client base that are looking at equally priced Rolexes or Omegas. Watches from these blue-chip manufacturers seem amazing because there’s both brand awareness and promotion to explain how anti-magnetic or tough or accurate they are. They aren’t only crafted, they’re “engineered.” And that’s to say nothing of this type of societal baggage that can come with being the man with the Rolex.
